Environment

The Government of Yukon is committed to ensuring that mining developments are managed in a sound and sustainable manner and with greater benefits for all Yukon residents. Locally, the departments of Energy, Mines and Resources and Environment manage the environmental aspects of mining in the territory. Federally, Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada are involved in the review of project proposals, assessments, and the regulation of mining activities in Yukon.

Assessments
Environmental assessments in Yukon are carried out by the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board, as set out in the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act.

Boards & Councils
Several boards and committees, most created under the Yukon First Nation Umbrella Final Agreement [PDF 463KB], manage Yukon's natural resources. In addition to providing recommendations to the government, these public bodies help in the planning, prioritization, and management of specific areas of interest, providing a cohesive approach to governance in the territory. Browse through this list of boards and councils and learn more about their roles and responsibilities in our industry.

Inspections & Compliance
Mineral exploration and development programs are subject to regular, periodic inspections by Natural Resources Officers (NROs) with the Client Services and Inspections Branch of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.

Public Consultation
Public consultation is mandated by some legislation in the territory. Learn about your obligations to consult and the bodies that manage these processes.

Reclamation & Closure
Yukon has developed a mine reclamation and closure policy. The policy and supporting guidelines are based on modern industry standards and are consistent with national mine site reclamation policies. In addition to regulatory requirements, the Government of Yukon also follows a number of best management practices and technical guidelines to inform decision-making.
