Infrastructure

Yukon is connected with modern communications infrastructure, roads and energy infrastructure. Every year, the Government of Yukon continues to develop this infrastructure to improve access to resources and improve the lives of all Yukoners.Current Infrastructure Highlights:

  • Over 4,700 km of all-weather roads and a year-round highway system that can accommodate loads of up to 77,000 kg.
  • Whitehorse International Airport plus 10 community airports.
  • A modern telecommunications network with Internet and cell phone access in most communities.

  • Clean, stable energy and a recently expanded electrical grid. Hydro produces over 80% of capacity, supplemented by diesel plants and renewable power (there remains large potential for additional hydro and wind development).
  • Year-round road access to ice-free ports in Skagway and Haines, Alaska.

  • There is a natural gas pipeline in southern Yukon. The Duke Energy Gas Transmission Pointed Mountain Pipeline originates in the southwestern Northwest Territories and then moves into Yukon past Yukon's Kotaneelee Gas Plant.
