In Yukon, three different bodies manage legislation, regulation, permitting, and licensing for mining.
Yukon Government
The Yukon government’s department of Energy Mines and Resources (EMR) is the primary legislator for mining in the territory. The Mineral Resources Branch manages mineral policy, land tenure, royalties, and mining land use legislation and regulations. Other EMR branches also play a role, such as Lands Branch and Client Services and Inspections. Additional departments that assist include Environment, Community Services, and the Executive Council Office.
Federal Government
Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment Canada play a role in managing mining activities in Yukon.
Third-Party Organizations
In Yukon, a number of boards and councils manage the environmental aspects of mining in Yukon. Learn more about their roles and responsibilities on the Boards & Councils page. It is important to note that these boards and councils work at arms-length from the government to provide third-party recommendations. It is the client's responsibility to become familiar with third-party legislation and submit all forms directly to these organizations. Yukon government's Mining Recorder's Office does not act as a client liaison to these boards and councils.
